NEW WINE PICKS FOR LATE FALL WEATHER
This Saturday we're pouring a few new arrivals that are perfect for the fall season. A great white from Austria a delicious but surprising Spanish red and a California blend that may change your perception of wine from that state.

Leth Roter Veltliner Wagram Hofweingarten 2014
Country: AUSTRIA / Region: WAGRAM / Appellation: WAGRAM/ Varietal(s): ROTER VELTLINER --- While we’re familiar with grüner veltliner (a summer picnic favorite named for its green skin), this wine features the lesser-known, and unrelated roter veltliner (as the name suggests- a red-skinned white wine grape.) Native to the Wagram area of Austria, where it is almost exclusively grown, it produces wines with bright, refreshing character, but with a spicy-fruity element. A unique growing region in the northeast of Austria, the Wagram is unique in its layered topography - up to 20 meters high - of loam, sand, chalk and loess that Ice Age winds blew over the primary rock base of the Danube. These tiny particles of soil covering bedrock allow the grapevine roots to absorb water and minerals even from great depths, eliminating the need for irrigation and chemical fertilizers. The climate brings major day and night temperature differences, together with cool winds that blow over from the Waldviertel, which lend distinct aromas to the grapes. Clean and crisp, with a touch of lemon zest on the nose, concentrated flavors of apple and orchard fruit and a bit more weight on the palate than grüner make this a great pick for drinking with pork roast or chickpea stew.

Fusco Mencía Ribeira Sacra DO 2014 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: SPAIN / Region: GALICIA / Appellation: RIBEIRA SACRA DO / Varietal(s): MENCÍA --- From Ribeira Sacra, a winegrowing zone in the heart of Galicia in northwestern Spain comes this elegant red, made from 100% mencía, a red grape native to the area. Ribeira Sacra means “sacred shore”, most likely a reference to the numerous monasteries in the area, where winemaking dates back to Roman times, and grapes are grown on extremely steep slopes (up to an 85% gradient!) of decayed granite. Here the grapes are naturally farmed, naturally fermented, and bottled with out filtration or fining. Juicy, vivid, and full of fresh young dark fruit including cranberry, black cherry, and a touch of plum, there lurks a savory, smoky quality just under the surface. Soft ripe cherry on the palate, with smooth tannins and a compelling salty minerality on the finish, this wine has streak of wildness offset by suave fruit making it just right. Ribeira Sacra's extreme slopes are hard to work and many of the wines are expensive, making this a great value. Drink with blood sausage with poached eggs and frisée. If you’re a fan of Loire gamay or cabernet franc, you’ll enjoy checking out this lighter, elegant side of mencía!

Folk Machine "Parts & Labor" Red California 2014
Country: USA / Region: CALIFORNIA / Appellation: CALIFORNIA / Varietal(s): SYRAH+CARIGNAN+GRENACHE+BARBERA  --- Folk Machine is one of the labels created by Kenny Likitprakong and falls under the umbrella of Hobo Wine Company which he founded in 2002. Likitprakong brings a fresh perspective to traditional winemaking, always preferring the least intervention possible, but willing to utilize modern techniques when deemed necessary. Using the Folk Machine label, Likitprakong often creates some of his more esoteric blends, like this southern French-style wine. The wine is mostly syrah from Vecino Vineyard in the Potter Valley. This sub-region of Mendocino sits 200 ft higher in elevation than surrounding areas, making it an even cooler growing area, with great diurnal temperature shifts. The vineyard is biodynamically farmed while the carignan comes from an organically farmed site outside Potter Valley in the Redwood Valley AVA. The style of the wine is straightforward: each lot was fermented separately before blending and only just over 20% was aged in large oak barrels. It's fresh and juicy with, black, peppery notes on the nose and palate, but without excessive tannins. This is an ideal wine for dinner parties or Sunday suppers, as it works with a variety of food and offers a crowd pleasing style.
