Pouco-Comun Alvarinho Vinho Regional Minho 2014
Country: PORTUGAL / Region: MINHO / Appellation: VINHO REGIONAL MINHO / Varietal(s): ALVARINHO --- Legend has it that the alvarinho grape was introduced to the northwest of the Iberian peninsula by Gaulish monks. One of the least productive grape varietals in the world, the effort is well rewarded with wines that delight and refresh. Quinta da Lixa - Sociedade Agrícola, Lda. is an award-winning, family-run wine company from the Sousa sub-region of Vinho Verde, encompassing 52 hectares of vines across six estates, which prides itself on maintaining both ethical business and environmental practices. This wine is an example of white Vinho Regional Minho, a style characterized by a crisp, fruity and floral nature, with notes of apple and pear, offset by intriguing hints of flowers, honey, and citrus. Balanced, crisp acidity and a good finish make this a great wine to open with smoked salmon, grilled sardines, lightly-spiced Asian dishes (including sushi!) and even BBQ.

Schlossmühlenhof Dornfelder Trocken Rheinhessen 2012 - LITER
Country: GERMANY / Region: RHEINHESSEN / Appellation: RHEINHESSEN / Varietal(s): DORNFELDER --- Hearty without being heavy or overbearing, dornfelder is an easy-going partner for mealtimes or simply sipping on its own. This dry red hails from the Rheinhessen, from value-minded producer Schlossmühlenhof. While the origins of the estate date to the 1800's, the Michel family is part of the new wave of producers: farming more consciously, lowering yields and producing dry style wines that the domestic (and international) market craves. This trocken, or dry, red is clean, fresh, and medium bodied, with black currant, floral, and mineral notes. Good acidity and light tannins make it especially versatile at the dinner table, perfect with grilled pork loin or pepper and onion pizza.
