LUSCIOUS SOUTH AFRICAN CHENIN BLANC AND INTENSE, RUSTIC SAPERAVI FROM THE REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA!

Doran Vineyards Chenin Blanc Swartland WO 2012
Country: SOUTH AFRICA / Region: SWARTLAND / Appellation: SWARTLAND WO / Varietal(s): CHENIN BLANC --- A collaboration between two long-time friends, André Badenhorst of South Africa and Edwin Doran from Ireland, Doran Vineyards fuses Irish flair with South African love of tradition and appreciation of the land. André has played a seminal role within the South African wine industry, founding and building up some of the Cape’s most iconic wine farms and enduring wine brands. The farm, Far Horizons, is in the heart of one of South Africa’s most up-and-coming wine districts, Voor Paardeberg. In 2012, accomplished young winemaker Martin Lamprecht returned from the Rhône Valley to his South African roots, and now in addition to winemaking, he is dedicated to improving the positions of his workers and continuing the charity work which his previous business began – supporting several township business ventures and paying for 50% of the schooling of 50 previously-disadvantaged children every year. The Doran Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2012 comes from old Swartland bush vines, with aromas of quince, baked apple, fleshy white pear and dried peach and a beautiful pale gold color. Clean and fresh on the palate, with hints of roasted almonds and honey, its lingering finish provides a touch of minerality and gentle but lively acidity. Give this a try with a grilled meaty fish like char or with pulled pork tacos!

Schuchmann Saperavi Kakheti 2013
Country: GEORGIA / Region: KAKHETI / Appellation: KAKHETI / Varietal(s): SAPERAVI --- Kakheti, near the eastern border with Azerbaijan, is the most important wine region in Georgia, with nearly 75% of the country's wine grapes grown here on land that has been used for winemaking for thousands of years. The climate in Kakheti is moderate, and quite similar to southern France in terms of heat and average annual rainfall. A specific type of soil, called 'cinnamonic', is found in Kakheti's key wine-growing areas. This is typically comprised of sandy, reddish-colored, calcareous clays. The soil's color is the result of its high iron content, which also brings deep flavor and rustic, earthy notes to the local wines. Saperavi is a dark-skinned, pink-fleshed grape variety native to the Georgian Republic (the name translates as “dye” from the Georgian). Saperavi vines are grown widely throughout the Caucasus (the divide between the continents of Europe and Asia), and in various regions of the former Soviet Republic, as well as in small amounts in the Finger Lakes AVA of New York and the Australian state of Victoria. Here, blackberries and cherries are highlighted by subtle smoky and spicy notes. Saperavi’s intense color and distinct acidity make it a great partner for foods, including cheese-stuffed ravioli and deep dish pizza.
