OLD WORLD DELIGHTS
This week we start with a riesling from the renowned Mosel region of Germany. Delectable aromas, low alcohol, and a touch of sweetness make this a versatile white to try with a wide array of foods. Then a new red arrival, a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, offers a chance to rethink what we normally expect from that region with a full-bodied, intense offering from young winery Terre di Eva. Our third wine comes from the Roussillon region of France near the Spanish border. A very old estate utilizing natural winemaking methods, Domaine Puig-Parahy produces a complex, earthy red that blends deep fruit flavors with sweet spice, clean acidity, and smooth tannin. A robust yet nuanced choice for hearty cold weather dinners- and a serious value to boot!
 
Sankt Anna Riesling Kabinett Mosel Kinheimer Rosenberg 2014
Country: GERMANY / Region: MOSEL / Appellation: MOSEL / Varietal(s): RIESLING ---From the Mosel, Germany’s most famous wine producing region, comes this delicious riesling. Weinhof Sankt Anna is a small, family-run winery established by the Schwaab-Pfeiffer family more than 100 years ago in the village of Erden. Helmed now by fourth generation winemaker Jürgen Schwaab, Weinhof Sankt Anna combines respect for family history and regional traditions with a philosophy of being in harmony with nature. All the grapes are tended and harvested manually, with the majority of vines located in the famed very steep Erdener Treppchen and Kinheimer Hubertuslay vineyards. Harvest is done in the traditional method, with intense grape selection at the vineyard and again in the cellar before pressing, and manipulation in the cellar is minimal. This lovely riesling comes from 30 year old vines grown on gray slate soils, which are enriched every five years with compost. Handpicked and selectively sorted, the grapes are pressed lightly and slowly before a six week fermentation in stainless steel, and spend three months on the lees. Delicate aromas of white flowers, spice and petrol on the nose transform in the mouth to reveal lush stone fruit character and a touch of sweetness all balanced by bright acidity. Lower alcohol (8.5% ABV) makes this an especially good choice for spicy-sweet foods: try it with Indonesian grilled chicken thighs with mango-peanut salsa.

--- Located on clay/limestone soils at the foothills of the Pyrenees near the French-Spanish border, the estate of Puig-Parahy dates back to 1446, while the vineyards go back to 993 AD. Taking advantage of 50 year old vines and low yields, the wines are made using natural methods: sustainable farming, hand harvesting, and natural yeast all come together to produce a complex, classical-styled wine with a distinct sense of place. Named after its winemaker, Georges, this wine is fermented and matured in concrete tanks, hand bottled, and unfiltered. Enticing aromatics of ripe elderberries and cherries, Provençal herbs, Ceylon tea, and briny minerals transform on the palate to juicy intense notes of black berries, fig, and sweet spices. The rich fruit is balanced by lively acidity and smooth tannins, with more minerals and nutty/vegetal touches of Swiss chard on a clean, pure finish.
