Varietal(s): ALVARINHO --- Anselmo Mendes began making his own wines in 1998 after previously working as a winemaking consultant in Vinho Verde and the Douro. "Contacto" refers to skin contact, which he prolongs as a way of adding character and complexity in his wines, including a cold maceration at 12 degrees C for 12 hours prior to fermentation. In contrast to many Vinho Verdes which are blends, this wine proves that single varietal Vinho Verde can be serious and stunning. Made exclusively of alvarinho grapes from stony riverside vineyards in Moncao and Melgaco, the “Contacto” has great complexity, with aromas of citrus and tropical fruits. With rich fruit and a smoky vegetal character from the grape skins, it finishes with good minerality and the dry, almost-bitter, palate-cleansing characteristics alvarinho is known for. Drink this with anything involving crustaceans!

Lean minerals mix with tart cranberry and ripe berry flavors, with a hint of smoky oak. Tempranillo and carignan provide the texture and balanced acidity, while the graciano adds weight and tannin to the finish. Serve this as the Spanish do: with cured meats like chorizo and Serrano ham, or grilled lamb chops with paprika spiced potatoes.

Presently the winery is run by brothers Pablo, Rodolfo, Ismael and José Miguel, who continue the family tradition of producing well balanced, elegant wines with good aging potential. 100% estate-grown tempranillo, this is fermented in stainless steel, then aged 14 months in French and American oak, spending an additional 6 months in the bottle before release. Deep red and black fruit flavors and touches of smoky earth, vanilla, and spice on the palate are well supported by a core of structured tannins and balanced acidity. A delicious match with herb-crusted pork loin.

Their wines are produced with grapes from the Quinta Sao Luiz, one of the most prestigious vineyards in the Douro region, using traditional harvesting and production methods. Complex and elegant, this displays spicy aromas brilliantly highlighting dried fruit and notes of honey and wood on the palate. Smooth and round, it finishes with an intense flourish of dried fruits and lingering spice. This is a delicious elixir that can be sipped on its own after dinner, or with a dense bittersweet dark chocolate tart. Perfect for late fall chilly evenings!
