AUSTRALIAN RIESLING, HUDSON VALLEY ROSÉ AND MENCÍA FROM SPAIN
Alkoomi Riesling Frankland River 2014
Country: AUSTRALIA / Region: WESTERN AUSTRALIA / Appellation: FRANKLAND RIVER / Varietal(s): RIESLING --- Riesling may not be the first grape to come to mind when you think of Australian wine, but after Germany, Australia is producing some of the best and most coveted bottles, from the bone dry to those touched by noble rot. Alkoomi—a family-owned and -operated winery started in the 1970s—grows their own fruit in the cool Frankland River area, now recognized as a prime subclimate for riesling. This crisp, clean riesling comes from estate-grown grapes planted on gravelly loam soils, harvested at 2 am, and crushed, then pressed, while chilled to preserve the delicate flavors riesling is famed for. Fresh on the palate, its vibrant fruit flavors of lime and grapefruit are a great match to serve with spring fare such as grilled chicken with lime and tomatillo salsa.
Tousey Winery Rebellion Rosé New York 2014
Country: USA / Region: NEW YORK STATE/ Appellation: NEW YORK / Varietal(s): PINOT NOIR+MERLOT --- From our neighbors up the river in Clermont, NY, comes a new Hudson Valley winery we’re excited to feature again (the pinot noir and chardonnay were hits!). Tousey Winery is a family-run affair, founded by Ray Tousey, and now run by Ray’s daughter, Kimberly Peacock, and her husband, Ben. This young winery has already begun gathering accolades for their focus on quality and elegance, and is hailed as one of the hottest up-and-coming wine producers in NY! This dry rosé was made from pinot noir from Tousey's vineyard in Columbia County as well as merlot from Long Island. Roughly 50% of the total volume was barrel fermented, giving it a nice round mouthfeel: a fairly unique characteristic for rosé. This has aromas of bright red fruit with some weight on the palate, displaying notes of cranberry and melon pith, a touch of mineral and the faintest hint of tannin on the finish. A tasty and versatile match for pork tenderloin, or turkey kebabs or burgers.
Triton Mencía Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León 2011
Country: SPAIN / Region: CASTILLA Y LEON / Varietal(s): MENCIA --- Jorge Ordoñez has played an instrumental role in promoting Spanish wines in the US, as well as financing talented winemakers in Spain. Triton is the result of the collaboration between Ordoñez, Alistair Gardner (a renowned winemaker in NW Spain originally from New Zealand) and the Gil Brothers in Bierzo. 100% mencía, the grapes for this wine were planted on mountainside plots of slate soils at 1,660 feet in elevation and fermented in stainless steel tanks. They were then moved to 3-4 year-old French oak barrels where malolactic fermentation took place before being aged for 9 months before bottling. Bright violet in color, this displays inviting spicy dark berry and mineral aromas. On the palate, it’s juicy and firm, with sweet blackcurrant and dark cherry flavors and hints of baking spice. The finish is robust and lingering, spicy with sturdy tannins. Try this with grilled steak au poivre.
