Country: SPAIN / Region: CATALUNYA / Appellation: PENEDÈS DO / Varietal(s): PARELLADA+MACABEU+XAREL-LO --- The origins of Parés Baltà date back to the 18th century, to 1790 when the first vines were planted in the mountains of Penedès, Spain (just west of Barcelona), on the estate that now surrounds the winery. In 1978, Joan Cusiné Hill took over the winery, beginning a family business that’s now in its third generation. Today his two grandsons, Joan and Josep Cusiné Carol, grow the grapes, while their wives, Maria Elena Jimenez and Marta Casas, are the winemakers and oenologists. Remaining respectful of long standing winemaking traditions, Parés Baltà welcomes innovation as well, with respect for the environment above all. Accordingly, all their vineyards are certified organic. Cultivating their grapes without any herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers, they employ a flock of sheep to fertilize and weed the vineyards after harvest, as well as hives of bees to assist in pollination. This easygoing white is made from parellada, macabeo and xarel-lo grapes – the same grapes used in Cava production. Bright and clean, with no oak, it displays enticing aromas of green pear and yellow apple. Fresh and crisp on the palate, it provides lots of soft fruit flavors, including golden apple, pear, apricot and pineapple. Good acidity and subtle hints of citrus, herbs, and floral accents lead to a balanced, food-friendly finish. An easy anytime aperitif, this also makes a great choice with seafood paella, or baked chicken.
Domaine de la Bastide Côtes du Rhône AOC Rouge 2015
Country: FRANCE / Region: RHÔNE VALLEY / Appellation: CÔTES DU RHÔNE AOC / Varietal(s): SYRAH+GRENACHE+CARIGNAN --- Vincent and Stephanie Boyer’s domaine in Visan is surrounded by remnants of winemaking history dating back to feudal times. Vincent's family resides in a fortified farmhouse built by Templar knights in the Middle Ages. An order of Christian crusaders who rose to great prominence and wealth in the 12th and 13th centuries, the Templars established many farms and vineyards. After time as a Benedictine, then Dominican, monastery, the Bastide property continues the winegrowing tradition today. Vincent has followed in his father's winemaking footsteps, and together with Stephanie, also a trained enologist, they carry the domaine forward with innovation and focus. Their goal is to make the farm fully organic in the near future. This red, a blend of syrah, grenache and carignan, is a fabulous (and delicious!) value. A wonderfully balanced blend of succulent raspberries and plums is offset by a dark, earthy streak. Dry and juicy, it offers bright, zippy acidity and gentle tannins, making it a fantastic match with roast chicken, eggplant, or a gruyère cheeseburger!
