Cantina Muri-Gries Müller-Thurgau Alto Adige DOC 2016
Country: ITALY / Region: ALTO ADIGE / Appellation: ALTO ADIGE DOC / Varietal(s): MÜLLER-THURGAU --- The ancient monastery of Muri-Gries, located just south of the Bremmer Pass in Süd Tyrol, is the source for this beautiful, classic müller-thurgau, a traditional white grape of region. Originally built in the 11th century as a fortress, Muri-Gries became a Benedictine monastery in the 14th century, and remains so today. In 1845, a Benedictine order from neighboring Switzerland took up residence, and applied their winemaking skills to the monastery's wines. Muri-Gries began to produce DOC wines in 1947, and since then has won local fame, a fame that is now growing internationally. Perfect for starting any meal, this white is elegant, brisk, and refreshing. From 30 year old organically grown vines, this sees no oak, remaining pure, bracing, and mineral-driven. Aromas and flavors of lemon peel, grapefruit, green honeydew melon, white flowers, and slate provide a beguiling glimpse into müller-thurgau's sophisticated side. Imagine sitting in the cobblestone courtyard of a tiny cafe in Baden-Baden (as this writer recently did sipping müller-thurgau), people-watching the evening away. Why not save the airfare and enjoy a pizza with shallots, arugula, and goat cheese with a glass of this in your own home!
La Grange Tiphaine "Ad Libitum" Vin de France 2016 - CERTIFIED ORGANIC
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: VIN DE FRANCE / Varietal(s): CÔT AKA MALBEC+GAMAY+CABERNET FRANC --- Created at the end of the 19th century by Alfonse Delecheneau, La Grange Tiphaine is now in its fourth generation of winemaking, headed by Damien Delecheneau and his wife, Coralie. Their careful attention to the vines in their 11-hectare vineyard results in beautifully balanced, precise, terroir-focused wines. This organically grown red blend combines côt (malbec), gamay, and cabernet franc to create a medium-bodied wine with juicy dark wild berry flavors. With a nose of bright red fruit, pepper, and dried herbs, and the palate-cleansing tang of balanced acidity and tannin on the finish, this is a perfect wine to enjoy with autumn dinners. Drink this with a variety of roasted fall veggies; also great with Mediterranean cuisine.
Monsecco "Pratogrande" Colline Novaresi DOC Nebbiolo 2013 - CERTIFIED ORGANIC
Country: ITALY / Region: PIEDMONT / Appellation: COLLINE NOVARESI DOC / Varietal(s): NEBBIOLO --- In the hills near Gattinara and Ghemme in Italy's Northern Piedmont, Monsecco was an old estate that had a reputation for making great wine in the 1960s (its long-lived Gattinaras from the 1950s-1980s are fanatically sought by collectors), but then sadly became defunct. Luckily for us, the Zanetta family has revived the estate and now crafts among the finest wines in the Colline Novaresi and Gattinara DOCs using the same traditional methods. Nebbiolos from other Piemontese appellations tend to be more light and agile than their counterparts from Barolo and Barbaresco, with an elegant drinkability and even more appealing price! 100% nebbiolo, the "Pratogrande" displays classic aromas of pie cherries, white pepper, and earth. On the palate, it unleashes a torrent of bright sour cherry flavors, refined tannins, and a spicy lingering finish that owes its character to the complex mineral composition of the area's soils. A delightful dinner companion, pair this with beef braised in red wine or a cannellini bean stew, rich with tomatoes and fragrant with herbs.
