Terrazze dell'Etna Vino Bianco "Ciuri" 2014
Country: ITALY / Region: SICILY / Appellation: N/A / Varietal(s): NERELLO MASCALESE --- Mt. Etna, despite its volcanic disposition, has a history of terrace viticulture, and the 120-hectare estate of Terrazze dell’Etna is no exception – paying homage to it in their name. The estate was founded in 2008 on a mission to rehabilitate and reinvigorate many of the forgotten terraces of the mountain and to become one of the growing number of excellent producers propelling Sicilian wine to the forefront of the global wine scene. This vino bianco shows us a willingness to break with tradition -- 100% red-skinned nerello mascalese vinified in a white wine style (so no skin maceration). Fragrant with tropical fruit, this wine opens up with sumptuous body on the palate and finishes with a bright and light mineral note. Ceviche would make a stunning partner to this wine, or even Ligurian pesto with linguine.
Terrazze dell'Etna Etna DOC Rosso "Carusu" 2013
Country: ITALY / Region: SICILY / Appellation: ETNA DOC / Varietal(s): NERELLO MASCALESE+NERELLO CAPPUCCIO --- Carusu, the straight-laced sibling of Ciuri, likes to stick to societal norms of red grape vinification by actually becoming red wine. This blend spends six months in neutral oak and another 24 months aging in the bottle, finally released when ready to be drunk. Nerello cappuccio lends ripe red and black berries and spice, while mascalese provides ripe tannins and great acid, keeping the wine vibrant. Did somebody say homemade pizza or spaghetti and meatballs?
Broc Cellars Counoise Mendocino County Eagle Point Ranch 2014 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: USA / Region: CALIFORNIA / Appellation: MENDOCINO COUNTY / Varietal(s): COUNOISE --- Chris Brockway makes fantastic natural wines in his Berkeley-based urban winery by utilizing low-intervention winemaking methods and sourcing sustainably and organically-farmed fruit from lesser-known vineyards all over California. In the winemaking process, he uses low-tech equipment and very little to no sulfur until bottling. This wine features organically-farmed counoise, a lesser-known grape appearing in Rhône Valley blends, particularly in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here in California it gets to shine on its own, with aromas of cranberry, spices, and earth, which give way to pomegranate, bramble, and a touch of pepper on the palate. Structured but medium in body, with bright, refreshing acidity and an incredibly smooth texture, this matches beautifully with burgers, grilled beets, hard cheeses, or even roasted game.
The Fableist Wine Company Merlot "Fable: 395" Paso Robles 2015
Country: USA / Region: CALIFORNIA / Appellation: PASO ROBLES / Varietal(s): MERLOT --- The Fableist is a collaboration between two talented Paso Robles winemakers: Andrew Jones of Field Recordings and Curt Schalchlin of Sans Liege. Curt is known for his high-scoring yet affordable wines, while Andrew spends most of his days planting vineyards and walking just about every vineyard in the Central Coast! (We've showcased some of Field Recordings' delicious wines!) A new vintage for us, this merlot delights with a luxuriously silky texture and aromas of black tea, ripe cherry, wild blueberries, and wet stones. Sweet plum, woodsy cedar, and warm spices glide richly over the palate, supported by firm tannins, making this a cozy, elegant companion to smoky braised pork shoulder and Mexican pumpkin. A perfect late-winter companion to warm up with!
