Founded in 1979 by husband-and-wife team Michael Migliore and Yancey Stanforth-Migliore with the intention to push the envelope for New York State winemaking and grape growing practices, Whitecliff Vineyard continues to experiment with a focus on quality and refinement. Their Awosting white and NYS gamay have been popular staples here for a while. Here is their easy-drinking rosé made from estate-grown fruit, a perfectly refreshing accompaniment to anything you might throw on the grill this summer. The wine is the work of American Michael Schmelzer, who planted vineyards in 2005. From the outset, he worked the vineyards biodynamically, following the principles of Rudolf Steiner. Schmelzer was concerned about building the vineyards “from the ground up”. Strong vines and healthy soil could only produce better quality fruit. The name means “off road” and the grapes for this wine come from small organically farmed vineyards in Sicily. Grillo is a Sicilian grape thought to be used in Julius Caesar's favorite wines. Not quite as well known nowadays, it makes a refreshing choice for summer sipping, with aromas of zesty citrus, cantaloupe, and wildflowers. Crisp and bright on the palate, it offers up delicious notes of citrus, yellow apple, and pear, with an earthy, mineral texture and fresh acidity. An eco-friendly go-to for BBQs, picnics, or even backpacking, enjoy this with pasta with grilled chicken and spring peas.
