Erre de Herrero Rueda DO 2015 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: SPAIN / Region: CASTILLA Y LEÓN / Appellation: RUEDA DO / Varietal(s): VERDEJO --- Thought to have originated in Africa, verdejo is the major white grape of the Rueda appellation of northwestern Spain, with commercial production dating back to the Middle Ages. Once almost driven to extinction by lack of interest, thankfully it survived, and today winemakers have a renewed focus on quality and expression of this and other traditional Spanish varietals. Erre de Herrero is 100% verdejo, made by the Herrero family, harvested at night and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. While many producers collect fruit from all over Rueda, Erre is from vineyards 15-60+ years old, planted in four towns in the province of northern Segovia. Verdejo from Segovia is known for a more herbal/forest-influenced character than that of other parts of Rueda, and this new arrival is a refreshing example. Lively and expressive, this bursts with aromas of white flowers, fennel, white peach, and crushed herbs. On the palate it is medium-bodied and dry, with more white fruit flavors. Refreshing acidity and touches of bitter almonds and minerals on the finish make this a great match with any number of foods. Try it with grilled shrimp with garlic sauce, veggie saffron paella, or tortilla Española.
Domaine de la Bastide Côtes du Rhône AOC Rouge 2016
Country: FRANCE / Region: RHÔNE VALLEY / Appellation: CÔTES DU RHÔNE AOC / Varietal(s): SYRAH+GRENACHE+ CARIGNAN --- Vincent and Stephanie Boyer’s domaine in Visan is surrounded by remnants of winemaking history dating back to feudal times. Vincent's family resides in a fortified farmhouse built by Templar knights in the Middle Ages. An order of Christian crusaders who rose to great prominence and wealth in the 12th and 13th centuries, the Templars established many farms and vineyards. After time as a Benedictine, then Dominican, monastery, the Bastide property continues the winegrowing tradition today. Vincent has followed in his father's winemaking footsteps, and together with Stephanie, also a trained enologist, they carry the domaine forward with innovation and focus. Their goal is to make the farm fully organic in the near future. This red, a blend of syrah, grenache and carignan, is a fabulous (and delicious!) value. A wonderfully balanced blend of succulent raspberries and plums is offset by a dark, earthy streak. Dry and juicy, it offers bright, zippy acidity and gentle tannins, making it a fantastic match with roast chicken, eggplant, or a Gruyère cheeseburger!
