CLASSIC FRENCH SELECTIONS!
Domaine Pascal Bonhomme Viré-Clessé AOP Vieilles Vignes 2015 - SUSTAINABLY GROWN
Country: FRANCE / Region: BURGUNDY / Appellation: VIRÉ-CLESSÉ AOP / Varietal(s): CHARDONNAY --- Situated in the north of the Mâconnais between Tournus and Mâcon, Viré-Clessé is one of Burgundy's newest appellations. The chardonnay of Viré-Clessé is distinctly different from the appellations further to the south such as Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran, in part due to a greater percentage of limestone in the soil. An old school winemaker in the classic Burgundian style, Pascal Bonhomme has some of the best-situated sites in Viré-Clessé on his 2.5 hectare estate. Entirely hand harvested, 1/5 of the cuvée is vinified in older barrels, adding to the overall effect of complexity and subtlety. The average ages of the vines for this delightful cuvée is 60-65 years. The results are stunning: an aromatic, sophisticated nose of clean apple and spice evolves into luscious baked apple flavors on the palate, offset by subtle touches of oak. A winner with cod poached in coconut milk with leek and fennel.
La Bastide Blanche Bandol AOC Rosé 2016 - CERTIFIED ORGANIC
Country: FRANCE / Region: PROVENCE / Appellation: BANDOL AOC / Varietal(s): MOURVÈDRE+CINSAULT+GRENACHE --- We look forward to drinking rosés each year, but inevitably some of the best come from the Bandol appellation. The wines possess a power and depth of flavor, while holding it all together elegantly. La Bastide Blanche is a great example of the quality found in this region. This wonderful wine is the work of Michel & Louis Bronzo, who purchased this property in the early 1970's. Bandol is unique in France in that it is the only area the mourvèdre grape must be dominant. The region is ideal for this sometimes difficult-to-mature grape. The warm summer days and stony soils are the perfect marriage for the heat-loving grape, allowing it to fully mature before harvest. This cuvée is elegant, yet capable of hanging with almost any summer indulgence. There are lovely strawberry notes entwined with a strong sense of minerals. Peppery notes add complexity, making this juicy wine hard to put down.
Ferrer Ribière Carignan "Empreinte du Temps" VdP des Côtes Catalanes 2013 -CERTIFIED ORGANIC
Country: FRANCE / Region: ROUSSILLON / Appellation: VIN DE PAYS DES CÔTES
CATALANES / Varietal(s): CARIGNAN --- In 1993, Denis (an experienced fruit grower) and Bruno (a wine loving civil servant) joined forces to establish Domaine Ferrer Ribière. The son of a vintner, Denis took over his family's vineyards intent on farming them more organically, and now Domaine Ferrer Ribière is one of two wineries in the Roussillon to be certified biodynamic. Although the domaine has existed for seven centuries, it was farmed conventionally until Denis and Bruno, dissatisfied with the quality of the wines, began working organically, eventually transitioning to biodynamic production. Set on 30 hectares west of Perpignan, with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, this domaine is further distinguished by the age of its vines. This carignan comes from 130 year old vines! This cuvée is titled 'Empreinte du Temps', which translated means 'fingerprint of time'. 100% carignan wines in the Roussillon are unusual, making this an even more unique gem! Of intense depth in color, it has an excellent rich nose of dark fruit, herbs and wild berries. Lots of plum, blueberry, and black currants on the palate are lent a rustic edge. Balanced acidity and chalky, not-aggressive tannins keep this wine fresh and incredibly drinkable, just fabulous with rustic fare like braised or grilled meats, charcuterie, or cheeses.
