INTRODUCING LITEN BUFFEL WINERY
The Niagara Escarpment is one of the fastest-growing wine regions in New York State, considered warmer and drier than many of the state's other grape-growing areas. Among the newest arrivals on the Niagara wine scene is Liten Buffel Winery, located in Middleport, in Niagara County. Liten Buffel, which means "little buffalo" in Swedish, is the collaborative effort of Zach Klug and his partner Patrick Vaughn. Klug studied winemaking at Niagara Falls Culinary Institute and worked at Freedom Run Winery before launching Liten Buffel in 2015 with an emphasis on low-intervention (or "natural") winemaking. They refrain from using chemical additives, preservatives, additional sugar, and commercial yeast and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. This year marks their first release of that 2015 vintage, and we're thrilled to introduce three of those delicious cuvées!
Liten Buffel Riesling New York State 2015 - NATURAL WINE
Country: USA / Region: NEW YORK STATE / Appellation: NEW YORK STATE / Varietal(s): RIESLING --- In the world of wine Riesling is truly a jack-of-all-trades, from bone dry and austere expressions to the unctuously sweet and sensual. Liten Buffel has produced a heady riesling with tons of beeswax, ginger and curry notes stemming from a portion of botrytis-afflicted (noble rot) fruit. While this Botrytis is the key to producing some of the world's most sought after dessert wines from the Sauternes appellation in Bordeaux, and when applied to this riesling from New York, it produces incredible depth of fruit. This wine deserves to be paired with hearty winter fare of sausages and sauerkraut or richly spiced chana dal.
Liten Buffel Winediva New York State 2015 - NATURAL WINE
Country: USA / Region: NEW YORK STATE / Appellation: NEW YORK STATE / Varietal(s): GEWÜRZTRAMINER+RIESLING --- For this blend, riesling partially skin fermented and botrytis affected, is blended with clean and bright gewürztraminer. Right out of the bottle, "Wine Diva" bursts with aromas of rose water and lychee, layered on a backdrop of dried tarragon and chervil. With well-balanced, persistent acid through the finish, and just a touch of fermented funk on the palate, this wine is reveals layers of intrigue from one glass to the next. Keep a cheese board handy for maximum enjoyment.
Liten Buffel Pinot Noir Niagara Escarpment Quast Vineyard 2015 - NATURAL WINE
Country: USA / Region: NEW YORK STATE / Appellation: NIAGARA ESCARPMENT / Varietal(s): PINOT NOIR --- Zach and Patrick are planting vines on their 4.5 acre property, but for this, their first release, they've sourced grapes from some other great sites around the Niagara Escarpment. Part of the former Warm Lake Estate, the Quast vineyard is located in Cambria, NY, and features clay loam soils on slopes facing Lake Ontario. Among Niagara's oldest pinot noir plantings, many believe it has yet to reach its full potential. With a texture evocative of Volnay, this exhibits aromas of blood orange and freshly crushed cherries, along with accents of raw mushrooms, dried flowers, and a touch of cola. In the mouth, it's on the lighter-bodied side, displaying a silky character with outgoing flavors of red cherries, orange peel, cola, and caramel on the finish. A touch of subtle gritty tannin on the finish all adds up to an inviting newcomer from the western part of the state! Try opening this with roasted mushroom and white bean soup.
