Comunica La Comedia Montsant DO 2016

Country: SPAIN / Region: CATALUNYA / Appellation: MONTSANT DO / Varietal(s): GRENACHE+SYRAH --- Long overshadowed by Priorat, its close neighbor to the east, the region of Montsant has its own unique character, highlighted by bright red clay, chalk, and granite soils. Celler Comunica is a small winery in Montsant started by Patri Morillo and Pep Aguilar in 2010. They first bonded as students on the commuter train between Barcelona and Catalonia, and ended up as roommates. After they finished their studies, Patri and Pep formed their own enology consultancy which evolved into the creation of their own label. "La Comedia" is their entry-level wine, a wonderful introduction to the wines of Montsant. A 50/50 blend of grenache and syrah from vines ranging in age from 25-35 years, the wine is black and earthy on the nose, with notes of crushed herbs, orange peel, and pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, it offers light and lively acidity, and moderately grippy tannins on the finish; just perfect with roasted fall veggies.

Lua Cheia em Vinhas Velhas "Insurgente" Dão DOC 2015

Country: PORTUGAL / Region: DÃO / Appellation: DÃO DOC / Varietal(s): TOURIGA NACIONAL+ALFROCHEIRO --- Lua Cheia em Vinhas Velhas, which translates as “full moon in old vines,” is the collaboration of three experienced Portuguese wine professionals: João Silva e Sousa, Francisco Baptista, and Manual Dias. After many years of buying grapes to make their wine, they bought their own small (25-acre) vineyard in 2009. Made from a blend of the native grapes touriga nacional and alfrocheiro, "Insurgente" reflects the hot, dry, granitic soils of the Dão, where the vines must fight for every bit of water. The resulting wine is elegant and complex, with an intense nose of dark fruit and pine woods. A rustic character in the mouth yields more ripe fruit flavors before a lingering, lightly balsamic finish wraps things up. Lovely with Mediterranean foods, pasta, or mild soft cheeses.

Romanelli Montefalco Rosso DOC 2012 - SUSTAINABLY GROWN

Couuntry: ITALY / Region: UMBRIA / Appellation: MONTEFALCO ROSSO DOC / Varietal(s): SANGIOVESE+SAGRANTINO+MERLOT+CABERNET SAUVIGNON --- Tuscany's next door neighbor, Umbria, finally gets its chance in the spotlight! The two regions share not only a border, but a long history of growing the same grapes. The Romanelli family has produced acclaimed wines, including Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, and olive oils in the Montefalco region for generations. The winery prides itself on an eco-friendly approach, using sustainable agricultural practices such as bird boxes to eliminate the need for pesticides, and also avoiding chemical fertilizers. This delicious cuvée is a blend of 60% sangiovese, 15% sagrantino (an intense, dark-skinned grape native to the region often described as "nebbiolo on steroids"!), and equal remaining parts merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Fuller bodied, but still table-friendly, this delights with aromas and flavors of black cherry, vanilla, licorice, leather, and a touch of incense! A long, structured finish is balanced by bright, food-friendly acidity, making this just scream for roast pork tenderloin with sun-dried tomatoes, prosciutto, sage, and cream!
