Domaine Saint-Rémy Gewürztraminer Alsace AOC Rosenberg 2015 - CERTIFIED BIODYNAMIC
Country: FRANCE / Region: ALSACE / Appellation: ALSACE AOC / Varietal(s): GEWÜRZTRAMINER --- The Ehrhart family has been making wine in Alsace since 1725, and the family tradition continues today as it has for centuries. Winemaker Philippe and his wife Corinne joined Philippe's father François in 1988, and remain faithful to the non-interventionist philosophy of his grandfather. For three generations, Domaine Saint-Rémy has embraced old-school viticultural methods, and the estate is Demeter certified in both biodynamic and organic methodologies. Alsace enjoys a sunnier climate than elsewhere in France, thanks to the influence of the Vosges mountains, which block the rains from the west. A region that has changed nationalities repeatedly between Germany and France over the last 500 years, Alsace enjoys the best of both cultures when it comes to winemaking: classic Germanic grape varietals are vinified with French delicacy. The Ehrharts harvest all of their fruit by hand, sorting the clusters in the vineyard rather than in the winery, before gently pressing the grapes. Fermentation is long and utilizes native yeasts. The wines then rest on their lees for 6-8 months, stirred twice a month. The Rosenberg lieu-dit features a warm micro climate which allows the gewürztraminer grape to achieve maximum ripeness while still expressing the region's characteristic minerality. 100% gewürztraminer, this displays lush aromas of tropical fruit, wildflower honey, rose petals and spices. Ripe fleshy stone fruit (peach, yellow plum) on the palate picks up accents of bitter herbs and orange rind, while good acidity keeps the whole thing aloft. A tiny bit of residual sweetness underlines these luscious flavors, making this a great choice with chicken biryani, crab wontons or farro pasta with fonduta.
Lise & Bertrand Jousset "Exilé" Rouge Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil AOP 2015 - ORGANICALLY GROWN, LOW INTERVENTION
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: SAINT NICOLAS DE BOURGUEIL AOP / Varietal(s): CABERNET FRANC --- Lise and Bertrand Jousset have farmed their 11 hectares in Montlouis sur Loire et Touraine since 2003 with the philosophy that wine is meant to be a companion to every occasion. Bertrand got his start in winegrowing by joining a viticulture program in Amboise after spending time in the military. Lise came to wine as a server and sommelier in Paris and the UK, after a childhood growing up on a dairy farm in Nantes. The couple moved to the left bank of the Loire, drawn by the affordability of land in Touraine. Their vineyards are spread across 25 parcels with vines ranging from 30 to 130 years old. The Joussets believe that biological diversity in the vineyards is essential to producing the "living soils" that yield wines of originality and character; a philosophy that led them to exclude herbicides and pesticides, ferment using native yeast, and limit sulfur usage. This delightful natural wine comes from organic cabernet franc grapes grown by Sébastien David in Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil, and harvested, vinified, and bottled by the Joussets. Juicy and delicious, this offers up plenty of aromas of black raspberries, plum, bell pepper and earth. On the palate, it is lush and generous, with ripe black fruit, mouthwatering acidity, and notes of earth and spice on the finish. Serve on the cool side, with mild cheeses, charcuterie, or try it with a turkey club sandwich or BLT.
