Benoit Daridan Cheverny AOP 2014
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: CHEVERNY AOP / Varietal(s): SAUVIGNON BLANC+CHARDONNAY --- Seventh-generation winemaker Benoît Daridan took over his family's vineyard in 2001. The 15-hectare vineyard is located in the heart of the Loire Valley in Cour Cheverny, and boasts two hectares of 50 year old vines. Benoît's wines speak both of his passion for his terroir and his devotion to local tradition. 80% sauvignon blanc and 20% chardonnay, this crisp new arrival displays an expressive nose of white pepper, citrus pith, sugared grapefruit, ripe pineapple, and crushed herbs. A generous palate of yellow fruit (more pineapple, tangelo, Golden Delicious apple, and grapefruit) is balanced by nervy acidity and a cool, stony finish. A versatile choice; try this with spinach and goat cheese-stuffed chicken.
Marchese Adorno "Brugherio" Pinot Nero Oltrepo Pavese DOC 2015
Country: ITALY / Region: LOMBARDY / Appellation: OLTREPO PAVESE DOC / Varietal(s): PINOT NERO AKA PINOT NOIR --- Located in Lombardy, Oltrepo Pavese DOC is arguably the most traditional wine zone in Italy’s northernmost region. Like its neighbor, Piedmont, the area was ruled by the House of Savoy for centuries, and its winemaking heritage can be traced back at least 3,000 years to an imprint of a cluster of grapes found on a sandstone rock. The vineyards sit among the foothills of the Apennines and the river Po, where the vines thrive on well-drained clay soils and a climate moderated by the river's influence. The area is widely considered the pinot noir capital of Italy (where the grape is often referred to by its Italian name, pinot nero.) Medium-bodied with appealing freshness, this cuvée combines delicious elements of crushed herbs and spices, red fruits both light and dark, food-friendly acidity, and dusty, earthy tannins on the finish. An easy, versatile choice for weeknight dinners, consider this for pizza night, or with a cheese and charcuterie platter for casual gatherings.
