Working from a state-of-the-art gravity-fed winery in the hamlet of Leiro since 2006, Montero harvests traditional northwestern Iberian varieties by hand to maintain the highest fruit quality possible. The majority of the crop is sourced from the estate vineyard of Finca Traveselas, but Montero also purchases fruit from small farmers in the area. The alluvial soils over granite bedrock lend the wines of the region a distinctive minerality and personality. Made predominantly from mencía (with touches of other native varietals brancellao and caiño), this gulpable Galician red showcases the bright, savory character of the region, with fresh blackberry and pomegranate fruit mingling with chewy notes of herbs and spices on the finish. Galician wines remain under-the-radar values, so grab a bottle or two and enjoy with potato tortilla with bacon, shallots, and truffle oil.

Just 30 miles from the Mediterranean, the town enjoys the coastal influence in the midst of Roman architecture, including a small coliseum still in use. The estate is located just outside Nîmes on the way to Avignon. Here Christophe Aguilar crafts wines using classic French grapes. The name refers to an aromatic wild herb growing throughout their 60 hectares of organically farmed vines. This pure merlot is soft, the fruit having taken in the warm Mediterranean sun. In French fashion, the wine is dry and fragrant with rocky, garrigue notes. Plush red and black fruits combine, making this an easy sipper or great with pasta with mushrooms and olives.
