CVNE "Monopole" Blanco Rioja DOCa 2017
Country: SPAIN / Region: RIOJA / Appellation: RIOJA DOCA / Varietal(s): VIURA --- White Rioja? Why yes! CVNE (Compañia Vinícola del Norte de España) is a 119 year old company, now known by its initials. Whereas once Spanish whites were ignored in favor of the full-bodied reds of the region, happily, today the tide is turning. Even better, these new-to-us arrivals offer some excellent values, perfect for hot summer nights where something versatile and refreshing is in order, without breaking the bank. 100% viura (also known as macabeo, a staple of Cava production), this offers up clean floral and white fruit aromas. Fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts, it was bottled early to preserve freshness. Notes of pear and waxy apple meld with a dash of salty citrus and green banana, leading to a lightly lingering finish with a faint hint of bitter herbs. A versatile grab for almost any occasion, try this with simple grilled fish or grilled chicken breast.
Vignoble Dinocheau Pineau d'Aunis Vin de France 2017 - ORGANICALLY GROWN / LOW INTERVENTION
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: VIN DE FRANCE / Varietal(s): PINEAU D'AUNIS --- The 13 hectares of small family estate Domaine Dinocheau are planted on tuffeau, a blend of chalk and sand that appears white. Now run by siblings Fabien and Laurence, the family has made a name for themselves by cultivating several abandoned grape varietals, including pineau d'aunis, among the most ancient of grapes in the Loire Valley. Formerly known as chenin noir, it was replaced over time by cabernet franc, and is now quite rare – a pity considering the interesting, elegant wines it makes. A favorite with light red lovers, this is packed with vibrant fruit flavors without being over-extracted. A dusting of fresh cracked black pepper on the finish adds to the savory character. This refreshing value works brilliantly with a California ham sandwich (ham, avocado, grilled onions, and Monterey Jack cheese with whole grain mustard on sourdough). Serve lightly chilled.
