Vigneto Saetti Rosso Viola IGP 2017 - CERTIFIED ORGANIC + LOW INTERVENTION

Luciano Saetti is one of a newer generation of Lambrusco growers approaching this much-maligned wine in a more modern (actually, old-fashioned!) way. His family planted their vines in 1964, and for years sold their grapes to a local co-op. But Luciano was inspired by the potential of their old vines of salamino (a thick-skinned, tight-bunched, darker, more acidic strain of the lambrusco grape.) He converted to organic (certified) farming and started bottling estate wines. Sulfur has not been used at any point in the process since the 2007 vintage, and grapes are hand harvested, de-stemmed and crushed in the field in small 100-liter steel containers for maximum freshness. Rare for Lambrusco, the secondary fermentation takes place in bottle, initiated by the addition of fresh grape must in the spring following the vintage, and is fermented to bone-dryness. This defies the sad stereotype of Lambrusco, with a dry, complex, earthy character, flavors of dark fruits, and a floral, savory finish. Add in its characteristic spritziness, and the result is an incredible pizza wine! (It's also great with cold cuts like salami, antipasti, or Parmesan dishes). Serve lightly chilled.
Venica & Venica Pinot Grigio Collio DOC Jesera 2017 - CERTIFIED BIODYNAMIC
Country: ITALY / Region: FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA / Appellation: COLLIO DOC / Varietal(s): PINOT GRIGIO --- Venica & Venica is a family-owned estate in the Dolegna district of Collio. Located in the Friuli region of Italy's northeastern corner, the Venica family has owned the estate since 1930, and have a reputation as winemakers nearly as long. Since the 70s, the family has ambitiously upgraded and replanted vineyards, invested in state-of-the-art equipment, and experimented with winemaking techniques. Brothers Gianni (agronomist) and Giorgio (cellarmaster) have been making the Venica wines since 1975, carrying on in the footsteps of their father, and grandfather, the estate's founder. Collio is on the Italian border with Slovenia, and "Jesera" means "little lake" in Slovenian. It refers to the name of the vineyard from which the grapes for this cuvée come. This site is at the bottom of a cool valley, irrigated by the water that flows from the surrounding hills. 100% pinot grigio, this luminous wine displays a subtle copper hue due to skin contact with the grapes during fermentation. A far cry from your local pizza joint's style of pinot grigio, this is instead rich, complex, and subtle in character. Lush aromas of pear, banana, Acacia flower, and hints of fresh apricot yield to a long, crisp palate of candied pear, quince peel, and minerals. Good acidity keeps things fresh throughout the lengthy, luxurious finish. A wonderful choice for summer gatherings, pair this with squash blossom fritters.
Mocali Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2015
Country: ITALY / Region: TUSCANY / Appellation: ROSSO DI MONTALCINO DOC / Varietal(s): SANGIOVESE GROSSO --- Dino Ciacci, the founder of the Mocali estate, was one of the 25 vignerons who, in 1967, founded the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Today Mocali is owned and managed by Tiziano and Alessandra Ciacci, Dino's grandchildren, who live on the estate. Tiziano manages the vineyards and winemaking, as he has since the 1980s. Mocali follows a traditional style of winemaking, and their Brunello has a formidable reputation worldwide as being both approachable and age-worthy. This delicious Rosso is the "little brother" to Mocali's esteemed flagship Brunello; the fruit comes from the same vineyard and the wine is made similarly, with shorter aging to make it more approachable while still young. 100% sangiovese grosso, grown in marl and limestone. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and malolactic fermentation is carried out in wood. The wine is then matured for 12 months in large French-oak barrels called “botti”, followed by additional aging in bottle for 7 months before release. Ruby red in color, this Rosso is elegant and precise, with a concentrated nose of cranberries and cherries, baking spices, and orange peel. Delicate mineral notes dance across a full-bodied palate, with an earthy, lingering finish tying things together beautifully. Throw a rib eye on the grill and enjoy!
