FANTASTIC FRENCH SUMMER PAIR... AND GREENHOOK GIN TASTING!
Today we're excited to welcome special guest Olivia Szwabo from Greenhook Ginsmiths, located just down the river in Brooklyn! She will be here showcasing two different styles: American Dry Gin and Old Tom Gin to help us celebrate cocktail season! And if wine is what you prefer, never fear: we also have two new French wines to help you through the heat wave, both from women winemakers: a casually elegant rosé from Bandol and a sophisticated gamay from Fleurie. Looks like summer still has some (delicious) surprises in store!
Featuring Special Guest: Greenhook Ginsmiths!
Country: USA / Region: NEW YORK STATE / Appellation: N/A / Varietal(s): N/A --- After several years of planning, experimenting and building their distillery in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, New York, Greenhook Ginsmiths released their flagship offering, American Dry Gin in February 2012 to immediate acclaim. Founded by Steven DeAngelo and his brother Philip, both gin enthusiasts, Greenhook Ginsmiths has quickly emerged as one of the premier American gin makers. Greenhook Ginsmiths distills their gin on a custom-made copper pot still, designed to work in conjunction with a vacuum. This allows them to remove air pressure from the still during distillation, a technique known as vacuum distillation. This has the advantage of allowing the distillation to occur at low temperatures, thus preserving the delicate aromas and volatile oils of the botanicals by preventing them from becoming “cooked” from excessive heat during distillation. This process results in a beautifully fragrant gin with lifted aromas and vibrant flavors. Today, Greenhook Ginsmiths representative Olivia Szwabo will be showcasing two gins: their flagship American Dry Gin and Old Tom Gin.
Domaine Le Galantin Rosé Bandol AOC 2017 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: FRANCE / Region: PROVENCE / Appellation: BANDOL AOC / Varietal(s): MOURVEDRE+CINSAULT+GRENACHE --- We look forward to drinking rosés each year, but inevitably some of the best come from the Bandol appellation. The wines possess a power and depth of flavor, while holding it all together elegantly. Bandol is unique in France in that it is the only area the mourvèdre grape must be dominant. The region is ideal for this sometimes difficult to mature grape. The warm summer days and stony soils are the perfect marriage for the heat-loving grape, allowing it to fully mature before harvest. While the area is quite warm, cooling breezes and humidity from the ocean help regulate climate. This domaine is operated by second generation winemaker Celine Pascale. Grown on terraced slopes overlooking the Mediterranean, this delightfully refreshing rosé expresses all the character the body of water offers. Elegant, yet capable of hanging with almost any summer indulgence, there are lovely notes of strawberries, blood orange, and woody herbs entwined with a briny minerality. Spicy herbal notes add complexity, making this juicy wine hard to put down! (It reminded this writer of hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean...) If this isn't "beach in a bottle", we don't know what is! Break out the fish tacos!
Anne-Sophie Dubois "L'Alchimiste" Fleurie AOC 2016 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: FRANCE / Region: BURGUNDY-BEAUJOLAIS / Appellation: FLEURIE AOC / Varietal(s): GAMAY --- "L'Alchimiste" is named after the Paulo Coelho novel, a book about pursuing one's dreams and learning life lessons along the way. Now approaching rock star-like status in Beaujolais, Anne-Sophie Dubois is part of a young generation of winemakers redefining the region's image. Born and raised in Champagne, she spent her early years learning wine in Volnay, Burgundy (not exactly the traditional story of a Beaujolais winemaker!) Beaujolais remains one of the few wine regions in France not economically out of reach for a young vigneron, and after falling in love with the gamay grape, Anne-Sophie now calls Fleurie home. Her domaine is composed of eight hectares in the heart of Fleurie that are planted on granite slopes and organically farmed, with most of her plots of considerable age, the oldest being over 60 years old. She brings a Burgundian approach to her winemaking, keeping things low-key in the cellar by using a wooden press, native yeasts, and gravity feeds to cement vats and huge used barrels for fermentation and aging. 100% destemmed gamay, "L'Alchimiste" comes from vines over forty years old, and is aged for around 15 months in a combination of cement and a range of different sized neutral oak barrels. Anne-Sophie bottles her wines unfined and unfiltered. This cuvée boasts a wild, perfumed bouquet of cherries, dark berries, licorice and a touch of gaminess. Beautifully balanced on the palate, it remains lively, with cherry, blackberry, and currant flavors mingling with delicate acidity, supple tannin, and a touch of weight and texture on the finish. An elegant offering altogether, pair this with grilled pork chops.
