Domaine du Coing de Saint Fiacre "Cuvée Aurore" Chardonnay Vin du Val de Loire IGP 2016
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: VIN DU VAL DE LOIRE IGP / Varietal(s): CHARDONNAY --- Véronique Chéreau-Günther left the Chéreau Carré family business and took with her the famed 40 hectare Château Côing de Saint Fiacre estate. Old-time negociants who owned several of the appellation’s most respected châteaux for over 200 years, the Chéreau family were legends in Muscadet. Côing is an ancient rendition of coin, or “corner”, and refers to the corner or angle where the Sèvre and Maine rivers meet and flow into the Loire, where the vineyards lie. Cuvée Aurore is a compelling chardonnay, almost a cross between a Chablis and a Muscadet in its steely, mineral-driven character. Pure and unoaked, a lovely light straw color reveals a wine of surprising complexity. Aromas of daffodil, acacia, and pear yield to a palate of white peach, winter melon, and gooseberry, with a delicate saline, mineral finish. Light on its feet without sacrificing personality, this is a great chardonnay to open for a variety of occasions – and a great value too! Sure to be a winner with anything from the sea, give this a try with linguine with clams and white sauce.
Artuke Rioja DOCa 2017
Country: SPAIN / Region: RIOJA / Appellation: RIOJA DOCa / Varietal(s): TEMPRANILLO+VIURA --- The Artuke estate is comprised of 32 family-owned vineyard plots on 22 hectares of land in Rioja Alavesa. In 1991, Miguel Blanco and his wife Conchi decided to followed their passion and bottle their own wine. Eventually, their sons, Arturo and Kike, became involved, taking on much of the winery’s responsibilities. (The bodega's name, “Artuke”, is a combination of the brothers’ names.) This fresh, fruit-forward Rioja comes from vineyards near the village of Baños de Ebro. The family chose to eschew the timing and barrel aging regulations of the Rioja classification system in favor of expressing the purity of their fruit and land on their own terms. Briefly aged before release, this is full of juicy, dark fruit, with a versatile, easy-going style. A great weeknight quaffer, this works brilliantly with pizza, pasta, or simple grilled chicken with mushrooms and olives.
