Grapes have been cultivated in the area since the time of the ancient Romans. For three generations, the Montesissa family has made wines by, in their words, “lovingly respecting nature and biological cycles”. The winery covers a surface area of about 10 hectares, three of which are vineyards, organically and biodynamically farmed. The rest is arable land and woods, which enables the crop rotation essential to protect biodiversity. Winemaker Elisabetta Montesissa focuses on producing expressive, unconventional wines full of character. Hand harvested grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts, and bottled unfiltered. This medium-bodied, piquant syrah is fresh and spicy, with savory, peppery aromas and slight rustic tannin on the finish. Pair with sauteed portobello mushrooms finished with a balsamic glaze.

Cantina Novelli was founded in 2007 with the goal of melding cutting edge technology with a respect for Umbria’s land and winemaking history to produce wines of distinction that highlight the traditional grape varietals of the region. This new Montefalco Rosso is medium-bodied and ready for just about any dinner occasion. Fragrances of ripe red fruit blend with dark cherries and faint notes of balsam. A smooth, fleshy palate opens up with loads of red berry flavors, all nicely supported by bright acidity, subtly firm tannins, and a lingering, earthy finish. Great with pizza, pasta, or truffle fries!
