Bengoetxe Getariako Txakolina DO 2016 - CERTIFIED ORGANIC + LOW INTERVENTION

Perched high on a clay slope, Iñaki and Rosa Maria Etxeberria make wines in an ancient farmhouse that's been handed down through the family for generations. After both phylloxera and civil war devastated the area, the vineyards were ripped out, and it wasn't until 2001 that the Etxeberrias replanted their land with the native hondarribi zuri and gros manseng grapes. Organic from the beginning, certification came in 2007, the first producer in the Basque Country to do so. One of the few estates in the DO not located right next to the coast or directly near the town of Getaria, it took Iñaki years to persuade the Consejo Regulador to grant them DO status, which they got in 2008 by using historical evidence of pre-phylloxera plantings to prove that vineyards had also been planted inland. Bengoetxe's terruño (terroir) highlights a different character of Txakoli. Their village, Olaberria, is a little warmer, especially in the summer, and the soils more clay-dominated than their coastal neighbors'. 95% hondarribi zuri and 5% gros manseng, from a single certified organic vineyard located in the highlands of the province of Gipuzkoa, this is fermented with wild yeast in small steel vats, and raised on the lees for up to one year. It is bottled unfiltered and unfined, with minimal sulfur used, and all CO2 is natural. (As a result it might be a tad less spritzy than many other Txakolis, but contains so much natural vivacity that the spritz won't be missed!) It shows lush lemony fruit, hints of grains, a touch of petrol, and a light whiff of chamomile. Uniquely savory and complex, this pairs with sheep's cheeses, fresh seafood and poultry, or Serrano ham.
Broc Cellars "Love Red" North Coast 2017 - ORGANICALLY GROWN

For those new to the winery, Broc was founded by Chris Brockway and built on a philosophy of sourcing sustainable and organic fruit on the way to creating exceptional wines. He takes a hands-off approach, allowing nature to be in charge. This is the fifth bottling of Love Red, and grapes were primarily sourced from 50-70 year old vines in Solano County's Green Valley. Green Valley is small strip of land, about three miles long and a mile wide, tucked between the south eastern corner of Napa Valley and southwestern edge of Suisun Valley. It’s unique in that it still contains many of its old-vine carignan and valdiguié vineyards on clay-loam soils. This is predominantly a field blend with a small percentage of syrah blended in from neighboring Wirth Ranch and Parenti Ranch (both vineyards also contribute valdiguié to the blend.) This wine, like all Broc Cellars wines, uses native yeast for fermentation. Bright and joyful, this juicy, light-bodied red will have you falling, well, in love! Graceful on the palate, it offers up plenty of clean red berries, hints of spicy anise, and vibrant acidity. Try this with herbed roast chicken with garlic mashed potatoes.
Ferrer-Ribière Mourvèdre "Empreinte du Temps" Côtes Catalanes IGP 2015

Country: FRANCE / Region: LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON / Appellation: CÔTES CATALANES IGP / Varietal(s): MOURVÈDRE --- In 1993, Denis (an experienced fruit grower) and Bruno (a wine loving civil servant) joined forces to establish Domaine Ferrer-Ribière. The son of a vintner, Denis took over his family's vineyards intent on farming them more organically, and now Domaine Ferrer-Ribière is one of two wineries in the Roussillon to be certified biodynamic. Although the domaine has existed for seven centuries, it was farmed conventionally until Denis and Bruno, dissatisfied with the quality of the wines, began working organically, eventually transitioning to biodynamic production. Set on 30 hectares west of Perpignan, with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, this domaine is further distinguished by the age of its vines. This cuvée is titled 'Empreinte du Temps', which translated means 'fingerprint of time'. 100% mourvèdre, this wine is dark and spicy. Intensely colored, it offers up notes of dark purple and black fruit, baking spice, tobacco, and sandalwood on a firm finish. Think coffee-braised brisket with caramelized onions or mushroom barbacoa tacos.
