Bodegas Gorosti "Flysch" Getariako Txakolina DO 2017
Country: SPAIN / Region: BASQUE COUNTRY / Appellation: GETARIAKO TXAKOLINA DO / Varietal(s): HONDARRIBI ZURI --- Wake up your palate from hibernation with Txakolina, the refreshing Basque white poured from a distance to accentuate its lightly fizzy nature. This cuvée gets its name from a geologic term for the unique rock formations of the Basque coast, formed under the sea 60 million years ago. These dramatic layers of rock are now part of the Basque Coast Geopark, which extends 13 km along the coast. Inaugurated in 2010, it's part of a European network of geologically interesting locations. Winemaker Juan Mª Etxabe is a fourth generation Txakolí producer, and planted vines of the native hondarribi zuri grape in the Geopark in 2008, releasing his first vintage in 2011. The winery, named Gorosti, is located on the coastline in Elorriaga, between the small cities Itziar-Deba and Zumaia (or the larger cities of Bilbao and San Sebastian). Bright and briny, the Flysch cuvée displays refreshing lime and citrus flavors, with accents of sea spray on a light, crisp palate. This is the kind of wine you can drink all day and well into the evening. A lovely companion to shellfish, this will also work beautifully with grilled or roasted sole finished with a squeeze of lemon and a few capers.
Collina Serragrilli Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2017
Country: ITALY / Region: PIEDMONT / Appellation: DOLCETTO D'ALBA DOC / Varietal(s): DOLCETTO --- Four generations of the Lequio family have grown and made wine on Collina Serragrilli (Serragrilli Hill), beginning in the late 1800s. The cellar is located right at the top of the hill, surrounded by the estate's vineyards from which all the fruit for the wines comes. 100% dolcetto, this cuvée is fermented in steel for the first 10-12 days, undergoing malolactic fermentation, then awaiting the arrival of warm weather for bottling. Bottle-aged for at least six months, this is fresh and luscious, with intense aromas and flavors of black cherries, red berries, and plum. Delicate spiciness on the palate and a firmly tannic, faintly nutty finish make this a fantastic match with the rich dishes typical of Piedmontese cuisine! Open early and serve with fresh egg pasta in mushroom ragù.
Celler Comunica Montsant DO 2014
Country: SPAIN / Region: CATALUNYA / Appellation: MONTSANT DO / Varietal(s): CARIGNAN+GRENACHE --- Long overshadowed by Priorat, its close neighbor to the east, the region of Montsant has its own unique character, highlighted by bright red clay, chalk, and granite soils. Celler Comunica is a small winery in Montsant started by Patri Morillo and Pep Aguilar in 2010. They first bonded as students on the commuter train between Barcelona and Catalonia, and ended up as roommates. After they finished their studies, Patri and Pep formed their own enology consultancy which evolved into the creation of their own label. Comunica (meaning "the (phone) line is busy") comes from the Fontanals-Baboixos estate vineyards, a showcase of decomposed granitic soils, moderate climate, and old vines. Made from 65% carignan and 35% grenache that range in age from 45-60 years old, the wine spends 22 months in stainless steel on fine lees. Refreshing with bright acidity, this is packed with flavor, with an enticing balance between sweet fruit (think raspberry, blackberry, and cherry), spicy accents of smoke and herbs, and a mineral-laden, saline, savory finish. Fabulous with food, this begs for tangy goat cheeses, spicy romescos, sausages, or flatbread with tomato, olive oil, garlic, and salt.
