THINGS TO KNOW
This estate has been devoted to organic production since it inception in 2001, when just 57 hectares (roughly 140 acres) of vines were planted. The winery had the distinct advantage of starting with virgin soil, meaning that it was unplanted and needed much work to clear larger rocks and stones. They used vines from certified organic nurseries to begin the project and have been hugely successful. This is in no small part due to the work the team did before even planting a vine. As most of the vineyards in Argentina are in the foothills of the Andes, location (altitude in particular) has a major effect on quality. At 1,110 meters (approximately 3,641 feet), Las Yeguas is well situated to capitalize on both cooler temperatures for slower maturation, and increased ultraviolet exposure (from the sun), which creates riper fruit. This altitude is a major contributor to the quality of wines from Argentina. Additionally, Luyán de Cuyo is a sub-appellation of Mendoza, just south of the city, that is particularly known for its Malbec wine. The wine is extremely elegant, with ripe currant and kirsch flavors. This will pair with just about anything meaty, like skirt steak with chimichurri.
