|Appellation/Sub-Region||Hemel & Aarde Ridge WO|
|Grapes||Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Roussanne, Verdelho, Muscat|
Western Cape may be South Africa’s largest and oldest winegrowing region, but the farm that Hans and Mary Anne Evenhuis found on the Hemel and Aarde Ridge above Walker Bay represents a unique and out-of-the-way corner of the province. Cold and windy, at 360 meters above sea level, with clay, gravel, and sandstone soils, their mountain farm turns out to be an excellent site for growing a range of white wine grapes, including chardonnay, roussanne, verdelho, chenin blanc, viognier, and muscat blanc à petits grains. This bottling takes advantage of this unique mix of varieties to produce an abundantly floral nose, with notes of stone fruit, nuts, and baking spice. Rich on the palate, but with a brightness that provides balance and lengthens the finish.
