“Xarmant” (char-mant) means ‘charming’ in Basque Country, and txakoli might just be the embodiment of that in wine form! Light and refreshing in character, it’s perfect for washing down seafood, or chilling with friends. ‘Xarmant’ comes from the Amurrio Valley, near the Bay of Biscay on Spain’s rugged, verdant northern coast. Artomaña Txakolina is situated at 350 m elevation near the town of Amurrio, facing the Atlantic Ocean, which contributes to the unique microclimate of the area. ‘Xarmant’ is a blend of sustainably-grown estate grapes, dominated by the traditional varieties indigenous to the Basque region: Hondarrabi zuri with gros manseng, petit manseng, and petit corbu. Grapes are separately harvested and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, utilizing ambient yeast. The wine sees two months of aging on the lees, with some bâtonnage, then is blended and matured in stainless steel. As is the regional style in Álava, ‘Xarmant’ is bottled (or in this case, canned!) with less naturally occurring residual carbon dioxide than txakoli from other regions, like Getaria. This compact can offers a portable palmful of refreshment: bright and briny, with bursts of Granny Smith apple, lemon, and a squeeze of grapefruit zest. Organically grown, vegan.
