If you’re looking for a little slice of Burgundy via Santa Barbara, you’ve come to the right place. Au Bon Climat, and winemaker Jim Clendenen, have earned an enduring reputation for top-quality chardonnay and pinot noir since 1982. These Burgundian varietals thrive in what’s now considered the first “great” vineyard in Santa Barbara County, planted by Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict in 1971. Au Bon Climat purchased grapes from Michael Benedict in the mid ‘80s, and today still purchase some pinot noir and chardonnay from the original plantings. Fruit is fermented in barrels, 50% new oak, then aged for 12 months before bottling. The 2018 vintage is generous and supple, with expressive layers of pear and apple fruit alongside a creamy texture. Additional hints of citrus and spice round out this luscious chardonnay, which is definitely age-worthy, but drinking beautifully now! Sustainably grown, vegan.
