If you’re looking for a little slice of Burgundy via Santa Barbara, you’ve come to the right place. Au Bon Climat, and winemaker Jim Clendenen, have earned an enduring reputation for top-quality chardonnay and pinot noir since 1982. The 2018 crop took advantage of a long and relatively cool growing season to develop evenly, to beautiful effect. This is voluptuous, mouth-filling pinot noir worth savoring. Red and black berries mix with baking spices on the nose, followed by freshness, structure, and oak influence in balance. Perfect for pairing with hearty meat dishes. By 2023—that is, having aged five years or so—it will display added complexity and subtlety in the bouquet and on the palate. At that point (assuming you still have it around then, in which case you’ll be sure to invite us over, right?) the producer recommends a pairing of salmon or tomato-based sauces. Organically grown.
