|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Sustainably Grown, Vegan|
Brothers Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche have taken their old vines, and their even older family winemaking house, to new heights in recent years. Careful attention in the fields and in the cellar produce a diverse range of Champagnes of exceptional quality. The Bérêches have not used chemical herbicides since 2003 and are moving in the direction of biodynamic practices. They invest time and care in each stage of the process, from manual working of the vines to aging in small oak barrels, and insist on cork when bottling for the secondary fermentation (as opposed to metal caps). The wine for this particular blanc de noirs is 100% pinot meunier from the Bérêche vineyards “Maisoncelle” and “Côte aux Chataîgners” in Mareuil-le-Port, toward the western end of the Vallée de la Marne. It brings an intensity and elegance that stand out among meunier Champagnes. Despite heavy rains early in the season that reduced yields significantly, 2016 produced a pinot meunier harvest of abundant fruit flavors and excellent quality. Aromas of ripe and dried orchard fruit, quince paste, and toasted grain open to flavors of hazelnut and smoke, with a pure, salty finish.
