Bodega Lanzaga, founded in 1994, is the creation of Telmo Rodríguez (son of Jaime Rodríguez Salís and Amaia Hernandoarena of the famed Remelluri estate) and his partner Pablo Eguzkiza. The village of Lanciego is situated in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria Mountains, reflecting the contrasting Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. Its 19 hectares of organically farmed vines are where Telmo seeks to recreate the vineyards of 150 years ago, where as many as 50 grape varieties would all be planted together. The ‘Lanzaga’ is the true identity and purest expression of his work, made with 100% biodynamically grown grapes from shallow, stony, calcareous, and silty textured sandstone soils. The blend is roughly 85% tempranillo, with the remaining a balance of garnacha, graciano, and a mix of other grapes. The wine is fermented in concrete with natural yeast and aged in foudres and barrels of different size and origin for 14 months. It has beautiful red fruit on the expressive nose with streaks of elegant flowers, cured meats, spices, and minerals. These all come through on the palate, which is refined with well-integrated, soft tannins. Biodynamically grown.
