At the foothills of the Pyrenees between Rioja and France, Navarra is distinctively Spanish, albeit with a French twist. Bodegas Ochoa is one of the oldest winemaking families in Navarra, dating back to the 14th century (they have an invoice from 1370!). Operated consistently since 1845 by the Ochoa family, Javier Ochoa took over the winery in the 1990s after leading the Navarra Viticulture and Oenology Research Institute from 1981-1992. Adriana Ochoa is the current winemaker, and the estate is in the process of becoming certified organic. Most soils have sand over a bed of clay with varying quantities of stones on the surface (the more stones, the more suited the grapes are for the Reserva category). This blend is 55% tempranillo, 30% cabernet sauvignon, and 15% merlot. Aged in American and French oak for 15 months, this aromatic, full-flavored red is complex and mature, with elegance from its long aging and spice from the wood. It is perfect to enjoy now, but can age for about five more years.
