Daniel and Jonas Brand are two dynamic and ambitious winemakers breathing life into the northern reaches of the Pfalz region, where they are tending the land with care and growing impressively vibrant wines. This somewhat-overlooked area boasts limestone-rich soils, and a cooler climate than the rest of the Pfalz. The Donnersberg mountain shields the area from extreme weather systems, while two nearby valleys funnel mildew-preventing breezes across the vineyards. Daniel and Jonas’ father, Jürgen, was one of the first in the area to practice environmentally-sound agriculture, and his sons have upped the ante considerably, becoming fully certified organic with the 2018 vintage, and integrating biodynamic principles into their work in the fields and cellar. Although young, the brothers have worked with acclaimed producers such as Lise and Bertrand Jousset in Montlouis and Alwin Jurtschitsch in the Kamptal. They harvest all their grapes by hand, and ferment using indigenous yeast with no temperature controls. The wine spends a good amount of time on the lees, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bright, pure, and zesty, this riesling bursts with floral, citrus, and stone fruit notes. Think “sunshine in a bottle” - and in a liter bottle, this happens to be a refreshingly good value too!
