The Burlotto estate is located in the commune of Verduno in the Barolo DOCG, and was established in the mid-18th century by Giovan Battista Burlotto, il Commendatore. The historic estate (which once held the title of “Supplier to the Savoy Royal Household”), is distinguished for its Monvigliero Barolo, from the famed Monvigliero cru, coveted for its south-facing exposure and white marl soil. Now run by Mariana Burlotto (Giovan’s great-niece), and her husband Giuseppe Alessandria, along with their son, Fabio, the winery produces classically-styled Barolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera. Winemaker Fabio (GB’s great great grandson), has introduced modern techniques that complement, never detract, from the elegant character of Burlotto’s wines, further cementing the estate’s reputation as one of Piedmont’s most esteemed small producers.
The ‘AVES’ barbera is a blend of select grapes from Burlotto’s oldest and finest vineyards (Roddi, Neirane, and Castagna) in Verduno. Grapes are hand harvested and fermented for 10 days in French oak vats, before malolactic fermentation takes place in 500L Allier oak barrels. The wine matures for an additional 10 months in barrel, then rests in the cellar after bottling for a minimum of 6 months prior to release. A deeper, darker expression than its cousin from younger vineyards, the ‘AVES’ unfurls layer after layer of plum, cranberry, and black currant preserves, with dashes of cedar and baking spice on a core of brisk acidity. The finish is elegant and palate cleansing with finely integrated tannins. Sustainably grown.
