The Burlotto estate is located in the commune of Verduno in the Barolo DOCG, and was established in the mid-18th century by Giovan Battista Burlotto, il Commendatore. The historic estate (which once held the title of “Supplier to the Savoy Royal Household”), is distinguished for its Monvigliero Barolo, from the famed Monvigliero cru, coveted for its south-facing exposure and white marl soil. Now run by Mariana Burlotto (Giovan’s great-niece), and her husband Giuseppe Alessandria, along with their son, Fabio, the winery produces classically-styled Barolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera. Winemaker Fabio (GB’s great great grandson), has introduced modern techniques that complement, never detract, from the elegant character of Burlotto’s wines, further cementing the estate’s reputation as one of Piedmont’s most esteemed small producers.

Burlotto produced their first vintage of freisa in 1850, and while we can’t vouch for the flavor of that one, we can say that the 2019 is outstanding! Freisa is native to the Piedmont region, where it was traditionally used to produce sparkling wine. The grape is similar in tannin and acid levels to nebbiolo (and may actually be an ancestor of nebbiolo), and this cuvée does indeed bring to mind a lighter, brambly expression of nebbiolo. This bottling saw a seven day temperature-controlled fermentation in French oak vats before malolactic fermentation occurred in stainless steel. The wine was then aged for 10 months in large oak casks before bottling, then cellared for at least a year prior to release. In classic Burlotto fashion this bottling melds elegance and tension, with sun-ripened wild blackberry and black raspberry flavors, and a spicy, woody note (like those berries were picked at the edge of a forest!) Medium-bodied, with long, racy acidity and moderately firm tannin, more notes of dark berries and tobacco flower round out each mouthful. Nebbiolo lovers looking to try something new won’t want to miss this! Sustainably grown.
