|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Sustainably Grown, Vegan|
The Cantina Sociale di Gattinara is a true regional cooperative, facilitating the collective winemaking of the Alto Piemonte communities around the town of Gattinara since 1908. Nebbiolo grown in the volcanic soils of the region (known locally as spanna) produces beautiful, unpretentious wines worthy of consideration alongside those of the more famous Piedmontese towns to the south. Locals know they have a good thing going in Gattinara; they line up with their demijohns at the cantina (cellar), under the ancient town center, to fill with the winery’s vino rosso field blend. This Gattinara DOCG, made from 100% hand-harvested nebbiolo, ferments naturally in large oak casks and cement tanks and ages for at least two years in large Slavonian botti, plus an additional year in cement tanks. The cantina generally ages their wines longer than required by DOCG regulations, meaning this Gattinara release could often be considered an unofficial riserva. At ten years old, this 2011 has mellowed elegantly in the bottle, with intense, bright fruit and multiple layers of velvety flavor. Brick red in the glass, it develops a rich combination of licorice and leather aromas after a few minutes of air. Full-bodied, with noticeable but not overpowering tannins, it bursts on the palate like a chocolate cherry cordial, followed by a spicy finish. Sustainably grown, vegan.
