|Appellation/Sub-Region||Aglianico del Vulture DOC|
|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Certified Organic, Vegan|
Fourth-generation winemaker Elisabetta Musto Carmelitano organically farms 32 acres of her family’s vineyards and olive groves in the southern slopes of the DOCG of Aglianico del Vulture in the Basilicata. The star grape of this subregion, aglianico, thrives on the volcanic soils of this (extinct) volcanic mountain, which imparts a softer touch and underlying freshness to this powerful and structured grape. This bottling comes from “Serra del Prete,” a single certified organic vineyard originally planted in 1975. The family has 32 acres, but much of it is dedicated to olive groves and they only produce a mere 2500 cases of wine per vintage. Many of their vines are quite old, with an average of 50 years in Serra del Prete and 90 in their top cru, Pian del Moro. The grapes are macerated for 20 days in stainless steel and fermented with a natural yeast that is present in the vineyard. It is aged for six months in stainless steel followed by six months in cement prior and is only lightly filtered before bottling. The concentration and power of the fruit is superb, with dark luscious berries and chewy tannins and minerality from the volcanic soil. It has a very long, elegant finish, and it is drinking beautifully today in 2020 but can certainly be aged for a substantial amount of time. Certified organic, vegan.
