Husband and wife Michele Fino and Vanina Maria Carta are the minds behind this alpine domaine. Michele says, “We are a domaine with a very poor history... The activity we can properly call ‘winemaking’ started in 2008, when we found a few amazing vineyards in Saluzzo.” Today, they organically farm 3 hectares of vines in and around Revello and Saluzzo, in the area known as Colline Saluzzesi, which is nestled into the far northwest corner of the Piedmont. Revello may be just 45 km from the heart of Barolo, but it's a world away geographically! The rugged sawtoothed crags of Monviso (one of the highest peaks in the Alps) loom over the landscape, which is distinctly cooler and wetter than its famed neighbor. Michele and Vanina focus on a handful of grape varieties native or traditional to the region: pelaverga, barbera, chatus, and pinot noir. They work near a mountain peak of 4,000 meters (12,000 feet) and their vineyards are situated at 350-500 meters (1150-1540 feet), making altitude a defining feature of their terroir. They are now in their fourth year of conversion to organic viticulture, soon to achieve certification. 'Comitis' is comprised of grape varieties native to Croatia, Italy and Switzerland - roughly 50% gouais blanc (locally known as charjus), 30% bolana, and 20% chasselas (aisone). These vines are now over 25 years old, planted on the distinctive acidic Alpine soils, and harvested by hand. The wine is spontaneously fermented in stainless steel, undergoes malolactive conversion, and is aged on the lees in stainless steel for 6 months prior to bottling. It sees light skin maceration to intensify the aromatics even further, which imparts a tad more color to the wine as well. If an "Alpine Vinho Verde" existed, this might be it! A touch of light spritz yields enticing floral aromatics, followed by a palate of fresh orchard fruit and delicate minerality. Organically grown, vegan.
