Husband and Wife Michele Fino and Vanina Maria Carta are the minds behind this alpine domaine. Michele says, “We are a domaine with a very poor history... The activity we can properly call ‘winemaking’ started in 2008, when we found a few amazing vineyards in Saluzzo.” Today, they organically farm 3 hectares of vines in and around Revello and Saluzzo, in the area known as Colline Saluzzesi, which is nestled into the far northwest corner of the Piedmont. They focus on a handful of varieties native or traditional to the region: pelaverga, barbera, chatus, and pinot noir. They work near a mountain peak of 4,000 meters (12,000 feet) and their vineyards are situated at 350-500 meters (1150-1540 feet), making altitude a defining feature of their terroir. Their Novamen is a barbera-led blend with pinot noir, from vines that are roughly 50 and 15 years old. Grapes are destemmed and fermented separately in stainless-steel tank and punched down three times a day for 15 days. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is pumped in another tank for malolactic fermentation. Then the wine is transferred without pumps into barrels where it rests for 18 months. The final wine is an infatuating mix of rusticity and finesse: ripe sour cherries stewed with five spice, whiffs of leather and humidor lace the aromatic backbone of this wine. Medium-to-full bodied with precise tannins that make you want to drink several now, and keep a few for later. Organically grown.
