Uruguay is not one of the countries best known for winegrowing, even in South America. Castel Pujol, however, is a winemaking project that goes back nearly half a century, when Quico Carrau Pujol found a location for a new vineyard in the northern part of Uruguay. Designed in a hillside in order to use gravity in the winemaking process, the family winery maximizes sustainability while producing naturally expressive wines. For this wine, winemaker Francisco Carrau macerated trebbiano on its skins, with the addition of a small amount of petit manseng skins as well. Aged in tank for three months before being bottled, unfiltered, with only a small dose of SO2, it retains a fresh fruitiness and an elegant hint of tannin. Cantaloupe and buttered toast up front lead to tangy citrus. Sustainably grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
