For enthusiasts of Brunello di Montalcino, the name Cerbaiona holds a mythical status. Starting in the 1980s, winemaker Diego Molinari and his wife Nora transformed a 17th-century manor right in the middle of the Montalcino area into one of the premiere estates in the region. Now in the hands of Matthew Fioretti, after Molinari’s retirement, Cerbaiona continues to shine with distinctive wines that elicit absolutely glowing reviews. This Toscana Rosso is no exception: its humble and somewhat cryptic name (“Lot 1/20”) belies an exquisite creation. 97% sangiovese and 3% ancellotta (a little-known grape often used for blending) from Greve in Chianti, all fruit is organically farmed and fermented with native yeast. It is aged in large Slavonian botti, and sees no new oak, before bottling without fining or filtration. Full-bodied, this unfurls gorgeous layers of dark red cherry, blackberry, tobacco, earth, and cocoa nibs, along with hints of green herbs and eucalyptus on the finish. Tannins are firm but not overwhelming; just right for pairing with a variety of dishes. A beguiling and delightful red wine from a world-class producer at an amazingly approachable price. Organically grown, vegan.
