Chartreuse is situated in a remote mountain monastery high in the French Alps, steeped in hundreds of years of tradition and history. This bitter liqueur was originally produced as an act of devotion by the Carthusian order of monks. The formula is complex, including over 130 different types of mountain flowers, herbs, roots, and other botanicals. The recipe is a secret, known only in part and only to three monks so that no single person is in possession of the entire recipe. Only they know the methods, which plants to macerate to produce the desired green and yellow colors, and they alone supervise the slow ageing in oak casks. In contrast to the classic green Chartreuse, the yellow is milder and sweeter, and was introduced in 1838. Today, it has become a cult classic, finding its way into a wide array of innovative cocktails, and is fantastic ice cold by itself.
