The vineyard of Château d’Armailhac, an 1855 Classified Fifth Growth under the name Mouton d’Armailhacq, covers 70 hectares (172 acres) in the northern part of Pauillac. It was acquired by Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1933, and was renamed Mouton Baron Philippe in 1956, until 1988, when Baroness Philippine decided to restore its original identity, renaming it Château d’Armailhac. Since being purchased by Baron Philippe, it has been inseparable from Château Mouton Rothschild. This is the only wine that the Château produces every vintage, and 2011 was one of the hottest, sunniest, and driest of the last forty years. The grapes were able to fully ripen before the end of September, making 2011 a classic Bordeaux vintage, rated among the finest in history. It is 57% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. It is deep and dark in color, with aromas of both red and dark fruits, particularly blackberry and cherry, with some roasted, toasted notes. The palate is powerful, with fruit driving the entry and then revealing a structure of silky, creamy tannin with a long, lingering finish and a kiss of oak on the finish. It is drinking wonderfully today but has plenty of ageing potential.
