Château Godard is the “sister property” to Cru Godard, seeking to highlight fuller-bodied, higher elevation organic Bordeaux. The estate has been farmed by the Godard family since 1895, bottling under their estate name since 2002. They are certified organic by Ecocert and integrate biodynamic principles as well. Methods far exceed organic viticulture standards, and include beekeeping, integrating cover crops, using natural teas as fertilizer, and controlling weeds with grazing animals. Winemaking is done entirely by hand, with ambient yeasts used in fermentation. The wine is vinified in stainless steel and two-year-old barrels (it sees no new oak), and aged for one year before bottling. The 2018 vintage is 65% merlot, 20% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc, and 5% malbec. Medium to full bodied on the palate, this offers up classic dark fruit flavors of mulberry, elderberry, blackberry, cassis, and plum, with elegant hints of leather, smoke, chocolate, and cigar box. Well balanced acidity and firm, integrated tannins lead into a lingering, elegant finish. Certified organic, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
