One of the most prestigious appellations along the right bank of the Gironde, Pomerol is also one of the smallest in area. Even scarcer than Pomerol vineyard space, however, is a well-respected Bordeaux winemaker with a long-standing commitment to sustainable farming practices. Alain Moueix has been an outstanding proponent of organic and biodynamic processes, and he has put his philosophy into action at Château Mazeyres and in the other vineyards he oversees. This 2016 harvest took place during the period of biodynamic certification at Mazeyres: they received organic certification in 2015 and biodynamic certification in 2018. Meanwhile, Moueix and his team have begun to adapt to changing climatic conditions, increasing the proportion of cabernet franc and petit verdot in relation to the dominant right-bank grape, merlot. This medium to full-bodied Pomerol starts with crushed berries and flowers over polished tannins. Nice acidity structures a rich wine that will only further blossom into ripeness over the next couple of years. Biodynamically grown, certified organic, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
