Château Pontet-Canet is located in the northern part of the Pauillac appellation, with origins dating back to 1725, when Jean-François Pontet acquired the estate. One of 18 Fifth Growth estates, the vineyards are planted on very gravelly, well-drained soils on the Plateau of Pauillac, with the Château’s 78 hectares adjacent to those of Mouton Rothschild. Wine from the estate was not château-bottled until 1972, and in 1975 the property was sold to the Terreson family (of Cognac Terreson acclaim), who have vastly improved the quality of Pontet-Canet wines to possess great intensity, structure, and aging potential. Today, Château Pontet-Canet is owned and run by Alfred and Michel Tesseron. The 2013 was an outstanding effort in an extremely challenging vintage. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 4% cabernet franc, and 1% petit verdot, from a biodynamically farmed vineyard, it displays generous aromas of dark plum, blackcurrant, and violets. On the palate it is elegant and supple, with lively, focused flavors of dark berries, plum, cassis, allspice, cocoa nibs, and licorice. A persistent finish delivers long, pure fruit tones, supported by firm tannins. Decant now, or cellar for up to 15 years. Certified biodynamic, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
