The Cahors area, in southwest France, has been known for its dark red wine, “le vin noir,” since the Roman era. Sixteenth-century poet Clément Marot, a native of the region, sang its praises in verse. Cahors is synonymous with malbec in France, and the Jouffreau name is synonymous with Cahors. The Jouffreau family winemaking tradition goes back to 1610, and some of the vines they continue to harvest date to 1885. They apply a gentle approach in the vineyard and the cellar, hand-harvesting the oldest vines and taking their time with vinification and bottle maturation. This cuvée derives from a low-yielding plot on the family’s domaine, based on clay and limestone. Brighter and crunchier than the Clos de Gamot release, this Gamotin is billed as the “younger brother” of the line. Fresh and approachable, it still shows the characteristic dark color and spice of Cahors, with elements of tobacco and earth, red berries and cherry. Sustainably grown.
