Patrimonio is the most important AOC on the island of Corsica, covering 400 hectares with half of that being owned by the two largest producers. The other half is split amongst 30 smaller growers, Clos Marfisi being one of them. Brother and sister, Mathieu and Julie are fifth generation at the helm of this estate, having taken over from their father, Touissant, when Julie returned in 2001, and her brother in 2012, from having careers elsewhere in France. Toussaint is still active in the vineyard, and is the reason the entirety of the estate is planted to local varieties and farmed organically; it has never been touched by pesticides or herbicides. Their vineyards are unique in Corsica in that they are full of large, white limestone chunks. All of their wines are vinified with ambient yeast and the most minimal amount of sulfur is occasionally used. The “Grotto di Sole” is 100% vermentino that is fermented in stainless steel before being racked into cement vats. One of the vats went through malolactic fermentation and the other did not, and they were blended after five months for bottling. The wine is bright but rounded, with notes of lemon zest and some red berries and a long mineral finish. Certified organic, low-intervention, vegan.
