The Santomas vineyard is located in the Slovenian city of Smarje, near the Adriatic port city of Koper, a bit southeast of Trieste, Italy. Local history says that a merchant named Glavina purchased the land around Smarje in the ninth century, and today his descendants, Ludvik and Andreja Glavina, own and operate Santomas winery. The winery is perched on a hillside 350 m above the Adriatic Sea, nestled between steep forested slopes to the north and the grape and olive producing coastal plain the south. Santomas specializes in red wines, and the ‘Mezzo Forte’ cuvée is a blend of 60% refosco, 30% merlot, and 10% cabernet sauvignon, aged for 18 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. We’re honestly not sure what the “mezzo” stands for because the bold flavors of this bottling are definitely and deliciously fortissimo! Deep ruby in color, it delivers energetic notes of spicy blackberries, raspberries, mocha, and woodsy juniper on an earthy, muscular frame. Perfect for pairing with hearty fare! Sustainably grown, vegan.
