Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe and a popular tourist stop in Hungary. Due to the soil deposited from extinct volcanoes, and the lake’s moderating effect on temperatures, the region is known as one of the premier wine regions in the country. Located in the village of Csopak, the St. Donat estate was founded in 1994 by the Kovács family, and named for Saint Donat, a Christian martyr who was a bodyguard for Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. The aptly-named “Magma” is single vineyard Kékfrankos grown in the unique volcanic soils of the area; a mix of clay, basalt, tuff, and limestone. Under the watchful eye of winemaker Tamas Kovacs, it is spontaneously fermented in open vats and aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. Bottled without filtering or fining, this delicious red is singular expression of the distinctive terroir it hails from. Fresh, ripe red berries, cherries, plums, and finely grained tannins mingle with savory, crunchy minerals, smoke and hints of white pepper and spice. Organically grown, low intervention/natural wine, vegan.
